Finding Foundation Cats & Reading a Pedigree

Your foundation cats set the ceiling on everything your program can produce for years afterward — you can't breed your way past the quality you started with. Rushing this step is, hands down, the single regret we hear most often from experienced breeders looking back.

When you're reading a pedigree, look for these titles in the first one or two generations, not buried four generations back where they say almost nothing about the actual cat in front of you.

Vetting a breeder before you buy

• Look at their cats critically, not just admiringly. Clean, well-presented cats in a breeder's own marketing photos is the baseline every breeder clears, not something that sets one apart.
• Check whether cats from their lines have titled well in other people's hands, not only their own — that tells you the line itself is consistent, rather than one very good handler making mediocre cats look better than they are.
• Ask for current health-testing results (Chapter 16). Pedigree titles alone tell you nothing about a cat's PKD status.
• Read the sale contract fully before you're attached to one specific kitten. A fair one covers a health guarantee, care expectations, and what happens if you can no longer keep the cat, without locking down where any future offspring can be sold.
• Be wary of any breeder who dodges questions about temperament, health history, or line background, or who seems a lot more interested in your payment method than in whether your home is a good fit.

Buy your male first

Where possible, get a proven, older male, often 3 to 5 years and already GC titled, before you acquire any females. Persian males can take 20 to 24 months to mature into a reliable breeder, while females start cycling around 10 months — which means an unbred, cycling female with no ready male on hand isn't just inconvenient, it's a real welfare risk. Repeatedly skipped heats raise the odds of pyometra, a serious uterine infection.

Finding a mentor

CFA runs a formal Mentor Program, though the matching process can take a while. In our experience, most new breeders actually find a willing local mentor the old-fashioned way: showing up to shows, asking good questions, and being someone people enjoy having around. A mentor's guidance through your first breeding, first birth, and first litter is close to irreplaceable — find one before the 3 a.m. emergency, not during it.
