Chapter 6 · Part I · Foundations

Common Illnesses & Precautions, at Every Age

This chapter is different from Health Testing & Genetic Screening, which covers inherited conditions bred into or out of a line. This one covers common illnesses that any cat can pick up at any age, Persian, Himalayan or otherwise. It also covers the precautions that actually reduce the risk.

Kittenhood: the highest-risk window

Young kittens have the least mature immune systems in the household and several common illnesses are both most dangerous and most preventable at this stage.

Immune-system viruses that affect cats of any age

Adulthood: the manageable-if-caught-early stage

Senior cats: what changes with age

Precautions that actually reduce risk, at any age

As with the rest of this guide, this chapter is educational, not diagnostic. If your cat is showing any of the emergency signs covered in the Health & Safety chapter, that always takes priority over anything here.
